For decades, NARF provided assistance to Indian Legal Services (ILS) programs across the country through the Indian Law Support Center. The center’s duties include sending regular electronic mailouts nationwide, hosting a national listserv, handling requests for assistance, and working with ILS programs to secure a more stable funding base from Congress.
The Indian Tribal Justice and Legal Assistance Act of 2000 authorized the U.S. Department of Justice to provide supplemental funding to Indian legal services programs for their representation of Indian people and tribes that fall below federal poverty guidelines. In 2003-2005 and 2010-2015, funding for the ILS programs was received from the Bureau of Justice Assistance in the Department of Justice.
